Garrett Brown, the Stanford freshman record holder in the pole vault at 17-9.25 (5.42m) and USATF U20 runner-up, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 2 and 4 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia. Brown, 19, shares the preparation for his first international competition and expresses gratitude for the support of family, friends, Stanford teammates and the USATF coaching staff. He explains how significant it will be to have Stanford pole vault, jumps and multis coach Arthur Ignaczak present in Colombia, along with USATF Director of High Performance and Mt. SAC interim director of Athletic Special Events Brian Yokoyama, who will coach the vaulters at the World U20 Championships. Brown analyzes the medal potential for himself and USATF U20 champion and Virginia commit Justin Rogers of Hershey High in Pennsylvania, along with female standouts Amanda Moll and Hana Moll of Capital High and Northwest Pole Vault Club in Washington. He also examines the recent success of American male vaulters at the World U20 Championships, including Zach Bradford securing silver in 2018 in Finland and Deakin Volz winning gold in 2016 in Poland. Brown reflects on his disappointing competition in May at the NCAA Division 1 West Regional in Arkansas, and being able to rebound by finishing second June 24 at the USATF U20 Championships with a 16-10.75 (5.15m) clearance at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. He revisits competing July 9 at the Max Velocity Athletics High Performance meet at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, highlighted by clearing both 17-6.50 (5.35m) and 17-9.25 on his third opportunities, along with having three attempts at 18-0.50 (5.50m). Brown speaks about how much he is looking forward to interacting with athletes from other countries and the opportunities to trade gear or memorabilia with his fellow competitors, just like his father Charlie did when he represented the U.S. at international events during his career. And he excitement for the future of the Stanford program, with the potential to have three men's pole vaulters advance to the NCAA Division 1 Championships in the coming years, trying to help the Cardinal make the podium.
